WA potato growers fund the current marketing system in WA in its entirety.
- The government imposed regulation of the potato industry in 1946.
- Since then WA Potato Growers have complied with the system.
- It has run at no cost to the tax payer and is fully funded by WA Potato Growers.
In March 2015 Colin Barnett publically announced deregulation and requested WA Potato Growers present a plan for a path forward.
Since December 2015 Colin Barnett has refused to act on the WA Potato Growers comprehensive plan presenting a clear path forward. The ACIL Allen report recommends deregulation on June 30, 2015 along with a $24 million grower assistance package; a sum that would be entirely REINVESTED by growers into building capacity for the WA potato industry, and general horticulture in WA.
Colin Barnett has refused to meet the PGAWA nor provided any formal statement since the March statement.
The uncertainty is causing serious stress on rural families and local communities, some facing financial ruins as banks refuse to approve loans without the guarantee of their businesses continuing.
As a result the market conditions are dire and prices have plummeted forcing growers to dump about 1.4 million kg of potatoes over the past three months.
End the uncertainty Colin Barnett.
